Returning starters: Six offense. Five defense

Last year: The three-time defending league champs were knocked off by Marin Catholic last season, finishing second in
MCAL before losing in the second round of the NCS D-III playoffs to Miramonte. The Hornets had seven first-team
all-leaguers last year, six of whom graduated.

The season ahead: With more than half their starters returning from last season's MCAL runner-up squad, the Hornets
could be in position to reclaim the league crown. Junior quarterback Dustin Treick returns with a year of experience under
his belt, and junior J.T. Peleki is in the backfield once again, running behind three returning starters on the offensive line.
Austin Carrow also figures to play a big role from his tight end spot. The defense is led by DE Jake Farney and OLB Zack
Bugos, while newcomer Trevor Raras sill start on the other end. "We pride ourselves in playing tough defense and
moving the ball around on offense," Brackett said. "We anticipate the same formula: hard work and discipline." Novato
participated in several summer passing leagues and full-contact camps, so the Hornets should be ready for their
non-league schedule, and they will need to be. As usual, Novato scheduled three quality non-league opponents in
Brentwood's Heritage, Foothill of Pleasanton and San Jose's Bellarmine. A sweep could mean an eventual shot at getting
back to the D-III state title game, where the Hornets lost in 2007. Anything less could eliminate the Hornets from that
conversation. Expect the Hornets to once again battle it out with MC for the league championship and potentially go deep
into the NCS playoffs.

The last word: "I'm very impressed with the off-season commitment, and they've really done a good job coming together
as a team," Brackett said. "They're working as a team, they're very supportive of one another and I'm happy with the
progress. We've still got a lot of work to do but I'm excited about being a part of it."
