Returning starters: Three on offense. Four on defense
Last year: The Giants were a decent 3-4 in MCAL play last year, but an 0-3 non-league record spoiled any chance they
had of playing in the postseason. It was Redwood's first losing season since 2005. Jake Anderson, an all-league punter
and defensive back, and offensive lineman John Fitch made the all-MCAL first team as seniors.
The season ahead: If the Giants are to make any noise in the MCAL this year, they will do it with experience on the line
and newcomers at the talent positions. Seniors Sam Perrella and Noa Namatesere will fortify the offensive line for a host
of Redwood running backs, including Zack Neiman, Jeff Calzaretta and L.J. Adams. Sophomore Zack Dubin will likely be
under center to start the season, and his primary target should be wideout Mackenzie Thomas. Senior outside linebacker
Tim Parks anchors the defense, along with Thomas at free safety and Cody Baldwin at cornerback. The Giants scored at
a decent rate last year, averaging better than 18 points per league contest, but to be competitive this year Redwood will
have to improve on the 27.6 points per game it allowed to MCAL opponents. To that end, Hirsch said he and his
assistants worked to simplify the defensive scheme. "We have the same defensive tactics, but we reformed some things,"
Hirsch said. "We simplified a few things to help take advantage of our players' ability to play. Last year we got a little too
complex with things and I think they got a little paralysis with analysis." Out of league, the Giants have a manageable
schedule, facing Mount Diablo in Concord, Windsor at home and Lowell in San Francisco.
The last word: "It's a very deep team in terms of talent," Hirsch said. "We have a lot of different guys we can put in, and
what it's done is give our coaches some degree of psychological security. É If one guy goes down, 'OK, get this guy in' or
'Get that guy in.'"
